The formation of Thanksgiving as an official, United States’ holiday, began in November 1863 during the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln officially established the holiday as a way to improve relations between northern and southern states as well as the U.S. and tribal nations.
Today, Thanksgiving is more than just a day of feasting—it’s a time to gather with loved ones, reflect on our blessings, and create memories that last a lifetime. Whether it’s the aroma of a perfectly roasted turkey wafting through the house, the joy of seeing a long-lost family member walk through the door, or the hilarity of an unforgettable kitchen mishap, Thanksgiving moments are deeply etched in our hearts.
For many, these moments are about tradition. Perhaps it’s Grandpa’s annual storytelling session, Grandma’s secret pie recipe finally being passed down, or the laughter-filled football game in the backyard. For others, it’s the unexpected—like the year the power went out, and the family bonded over a candlelit dinner of sandwiches. These stories remind us that Thanksgiving is as much about connection as it is about gratitude.
One of our NYC journalists shared a heartwarming photo that perfectly embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving. Her mom, Lonnie Melzer, is seen polishing silver in preparation for the holiday—a task that reflects both dedication and tradition. Lonnie, who lives in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, will be celebrating her 103rd birthday on December 31. This beautiful moment reminds us that the little things, like preparing the table with care, hold so much meaning. It’s these acts of love and tradition that make Thanksgiving truly special.
Traditional Norman Rockwell type celebrations don’t necessarily suit everyone. Nor does turkey. People vary. So many different cultures, foods, ways to be thankful, ways to connect. So many views of the meaning of this day. The day does offer time to focus on the good, the kind, the beautiful, and the blessing of this special day. Take a breath and enjoy it!
